For these thinkers, philosophizing was an active process, both as a way to change social realities and to use experience to modify the philosophies themselves.

A woman could be a philosopher only if she “thought like a man.” Gender bias was thus built into the qualifications for membership in the profession.

Specifically towards women, there is discrimination, which is the unjust treatment of a group of people because they belong to that group.

There is objectification, which is when someone is regarded as an object, and can then be treated as less important.

Pragmatist feminist philosophers have been addressing several different projects over the past decades, including a) the recovery of women who were influential in the development of American pragmatism but whose work subsequently all but disappeared in the history of philosophy, b) a rereading of the “canon” of pragmatist philosophers, analyzing their writing in light of their philosophies and attitudes about women, and c) the utilization of pragmatist philosophies as a resource for contemporary feminist philosophy and activism.

The late 20 century saw a resurgence of interest in American pragmatist philosophy, and part of the energy of that resurgence is due to feminist interest in pragmatism.
